I pulled my supers off and looked in the bottom deep. I saw about 3 inches of honey, the rest was pollen, but cells were not full. That was the outer frame. The next frame in had zero honey and some pollen and some shotgun brood (very little brood). And a lot of empty cells. The third frame in had some honey and pollen and capped brood and open brood too, plus empty cells, so I know she was laying recently. I quit inspecting after I saw larva, because I hate disrupting them too bad and it was cool, cloudy and misty raining in spurts. Today was supposed to be the best day for awhile, so I did it today.
It has been chilly and raining a lot the last week and they have been missing out on the last bit of goldenrod. I have seen it starting to turn brown while the girls have been stuck in the hive.
My questions are, I thought they moved there stores around during bad weather and at night?
Will they move the stores from supers down to brood box?
Some empty cells are good for wintering?
I think that instead of moving the honey down, they normally move the cluster up into the honey over winter. In the early spring, as they get some warmer days, they will go down to get the pollen which will be there for them before any natural pollen is available from foraging.
