Title: location - how close is too close?
Post by: mikebrg on October 30, 2014, 08:25:57 PM
Hi all,

I'm in the process of setting up my hives and while re-reading the NSWDPI "responsible beekeeping primefact" sheet it says "Hives should not be located close to schools,
childcare centres, hospitals, sporting grounds or other public facilities. " I have a small park with a swing set about 100m from the house would this be considered too close? I may have an alternate location but this could really put a spanner in the works  :-\

Thanks
Mike

My experience would say this is not a problem.

put up a 6 foot fence barrier. that makes them fly up away from pedestrians

By 100m they are well and truely up and on their way. It should cause no problems.

Thanks Everyone,

The bees would have to go over the top of the house to get there so sounds like everything would be fine. Like I said if it does become an issue I do have an alternate site but it will require a bit more preparation.

Bees are no more likely to attack children at school than they are to attack the neighborhood children... I think the irresponsible thing is to keep mean bees...  It's wise to have a contingency plan in case yours get mean... so you can remove them and deal with it elsewhere...
