Title: Reducing the entrance
Post by: GSF on November 01, 2014, 09:09:32 PM
Last night we had our first taste of cool weather (30's) with some mo powerful wind. I had about 20+ empty supers stacked for next year. They had a piece of tin with cinder blocks on top. The wind blew them over. My bee hives were okay, however, I had a piece of wood 1x3 by almost the width of the hive. The wind blew several of them away from the hive and on the ground. I stuffed cloth in the space where the wood was.

I know as soon as it rains again (when ever that'll be) those pieces of cloth will become wet. If left in there would this be a good breeding ground for something like nosema?

I cut my reducers the height of the opening. Then dado the entrance into them, 3/8 in. high. It slides into the hive, flush with the front panel. The 3/8 height of the entrance works as a mouse guard. The wind won't move it.

 :th_thumbsupup: what iddee said.
I have the opposite problem and usually need a hammer and chisel to get them out!
