Title: Yellow box in Melbourne (Nov 2014) ?
Post by: damienpryan on November 19, 2014, 10:09:40 PM
Hi All,

Is yellow box flowering at the moment ?
I moved some hives from Box Hill (Melb) to my brother's house in Montmorency.
I could see lots of old gums near his house that I think were Yellow Box.
And the sound of bees working in the trees.

It seems as if 2 suburbs away makes a big difference (well bigger than I expected).

Anyone else had experience with Yellow box in Melbourne ?

Cheers

Damien

The Yellow Box is going off! be very careful though! Yellow Box makes an amazing honey but it will decimate your colonies! it doesn't produce pollen and the queen will stop laying on it if you either didn't have enough prior to going on to it or don't give a supplement

Does it matter in the Melbourne suburbs ?
There is lots of dandelion around (plus other things)
Or will the bees just work themselves to death on the yellow box and ignore everything else ?

Cheers

If there's Pollen they will find it mate, the Suburbs are great places for Bee's.
