Hi
Currently live in the Yukon (North of 60). Planning on starting beekeeping. I have some previous experience doing it in Northern Ontario.
1st year plan will be to establish a bear proof enclosure, start with 2 nucs, develop a winterisation plan, and have fun.
Cheers
Sounds like fun Yukon. I remember how our pal Finski always used to remind us he was above 60 degrees latitude (in Helsinki) when debating issues of "real" winter. Northern Ontario gets pretty darn cold so I'm sure you know the routine. Is it colder in the Yukon?
I would assume you're going with foam hives, or at least well insulated wood hives over winter. There is always the option of electric heating, or wintering indoors if it is just too extreme up there.
Hey, at least you've got Internet!
Welcome from Oz!
Welcome! :)
Welcome
We are being spoiled this winter weather wise (relative) only one -30C and steady -15 to -20C. We had used 2" styrofoam around the hives in Northern Ontario with good success in overwintering them. I will most likely move them to a cold storage area (partitioned arctic entry).
I got lucky last year and found a super and a bunch of frames at the recycle shop for free. Getting ready to put in my order for bees and supplies. Still have my bee suit and smoker from before...
