I'm new (sort of - more on that in a minute) to beekeeping and decided to register on a forum.
Other hobbies: woodworking (furniture), rock climbing, home remodeling (since I do it enough I may as well call it a hobby).
Occupation: Electrical engineer in the oilfield service industry specializing in automation.
My Grandfather was a large scale bee farmer in Arizona so I grew up around bees. As I got older I had the opportunity to help him in various ways, so I am not completely unfamiliar with it, but the nuances of it will be a learning adventure. As a result bee farming has always been something that I wanted to do, one of those 'someday' things in the back of my mind but I never got around to it. Lately I had been thinking about it more and more and one day I made a comment and my 17yr old son prairie dogged up from his video game and said he was interested in doing it too. So, I ordered some bees (Carnolians), got a copy of "Beekeeping for Dummies" and started making the hive boxes (I have a well equipped wood shop) and reading up online and spent a few hours on Youtube. I went and talked to a couple of local beekeepers and discovered that someone a block down the street has five hives. So I walked over and introduced myself and asked him some questions. He was more than willing to answer and even volunteered to help me hive my bees when they get here. Already two good things have come out of it. A new friend. And my son and I have had some good shop time together making the boxes (I'm making Langstroth 10 frame mediums).
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the future, but funny as it sounds, I'm looking forward to my next sting. :tongue:
