Title: Mouse nest!!!!
Post by: Sean Kelly on February 28, 2015, 08:47:24 PM
Thank you CCI varmint control bullets for giving me a reason to take my 22 magnum into my honeybee yard! This little fella is the reason my last hive died over the winter! Nothing like the smell of beeswax and gun smoke!

we used to load our 45 LC with a primer a pinch of powder, cardboard disc, pack it with rice and hold it in with another cardboard disc. We could take out mice rats or pigeons with no damage to anything. They didnt do much to coons and groundhogs though.. had MANY a wonderful evening in the barn with friends, then we decided beer would go well with our new past time..   DANG but rice can leave a welt!

The CCI rounds I used are the ones with the tiny shotgun loads.  There's a blue cap filled with tiny bb's the size of ground pepper instead of a bullet.  So it made a heck of a noise being a 22 Mag, but no damage to the hive.

Mice can only survive in a hive when the bees are in cluster due to very cold weather. When the bees break cluster, if the mouse is still in it, the bees will kill it. During the summer the mice will not move in. During winter prep, if you are in cold weather area, you add mouse guards to keep them out. All they are are metal plates with 3/8" holes in it that poi cover the entrance up with. It keeps the mice out.

Is that a solid projectile?

I used to slot starlings nesting in my roof using a .22LR dustshot (number 12 shot I think). Really good as it didn't damage the roof, fascia or eavesgutters and fairly safe to use in a low-density residential area.

The big question is where did you get .22 ammo?  We have not seen any on the shelf in almost two years.  We are going rat shooting in Eastern Oregon and we shoot a carton per man, per day easy and I cannot find it for the hoarders.  I am going to be shooting 17 hmr this year and that is spendy.
As for the mouse I typically punch them. It really freaks the kids out but it gets the job done.

You can still get it, but like you said, it runs off the shelves quick. Thank the current administration for that. Glad I got those 550 boxes for 12 bucks back in 08. G

Not sure it is hoarding, millions made every day and the stores only get a few boxes per week. That does not add up.

Oh it adds up all right. When everything finally goes south in a handbasket, there'll be piles of it laying around - just like in the shootem up video games...

I bought a big surplus of 22 ammo months before the shortage crisis for shooting the raccoons who were killing my turkeys and chickens.  I guess you could say I got lucky.  I've been just using it all very sparingly ever since.
