So the weather service released a freeze warning for this week - weekend. Should I do anything with the hive? I hate Jersey weather :( 80? one day and 50? the next!
I would not worry about one night. We are having frost tonight thus no apple trees are getting planted until the weekend. If your hives are in a high wind area, you may want to put some sort of wind break. I have used hay bails in the past (but I later put in a berm.) -Mike
It's a freeze watch for Friday and Saturday.
You should be fine as long as the bees are in their hive and able to keep the Queen warm and fed. I have a similar problem here in the Catskills Mountains in NY, it is snowing today and cold with a stiff breeze, it is going to snow tomorrow too and I am picking up a package and, hopefully, a Queen. How is one supposed to install a package in the snow!?! Or, I should say, while it is snowing....But the bees are more resilient then we give them credit for and have been around for millions of years.
What area of South Jersey are you in? I grew up in Haddonfield.

You are very lucky to have been able to leave NJ! Seems like the more I try to leave the harder it is to leave. NJ is like a spiderweb... only the lucky ones get out :)
Central Jersey...I suppose its all from where one stands. Vineland was almost home when the Fed Prison opened near there. As for getting out of Jersey I ended up in NY...A slight downgrade! But I am retired and looking a bit south still keeping to the Appalachian Mountains.
If they have food supply or stores they will be just fine.We installed packages before just to have temps drop into the twenties overnight and only forties during the day.(Mid March). No problem!
