Title: Smokers (BBQ) and Bees
Post by: KeyLargoBees on May 25, 2015, 12:20:06 PM
I am from Texas...and I love my BBQ....specifically long slow (10+hrs)  Briskit smoking with aromatic woods. Since I am just getting into beekeeping my two hobbies haven't conflicted ....YET....but its summer and I feel the need to feed my carnivorous self and was wondering about smoke from the smoker and how it would affect the bees. While not urban precisely I am on a lot in a subdivision down here in the keys so distances are tighter than they would be for people who are on land or out in the country.

Any advice from BBQ chefs out there who are also bee kepers on this matter would be appreciated.

Never had slow smoked bees. Problerly on the lean side?
Really there should be no problem I have a hive ten feet from my wood smoker box. If the wind is right and it does head to the entrance they may just start honey sucking. If your worried about it add a extra pipe to the smoker vent to get it up 3-4 feet that should be enough to get the smoke up and away from the hive entrance if the hive is close to the smokere. If more than ten feet don't worry about it. Just let me know when to show up for dinner

Like divemaster I've got hives (nucs actually) that are near to my BBQ pit (+/- 10 yards).  I've never had a problem with the smoke messing with them.  I love to BBQ (ironically grew up outside SA) whenever I can and low and slow works on just about everything by a Nike shoe or venison.

Agree, the smoker 10+ yards is not a problem. As for the rest, I usually put a cup of cheep bourbon in a small pan so the smoke blows over the pan.  -Mike
