Title: Screened bottom board
Post by: Paul_B on June 02, 2015, 06:39:16 AM
How cold is too cold for a screened bottom board?   I recently put one in each of my hives expecting nice weather and now we are getting nights in the upper 50's and days in the mid 60's.

Will the bees and brood be alright?

They'll be fine as long as the population is strong.  I run those on a lot of my hives 365.

All of my hives have SBBs. Since I get temps in the single digits with wind, I close off the back (drawer area) with old political signs cut to size (unfortunately there is an overabundance of these in our area) The front entrance does not face the wind so the small entrance is just fine for ventilation.  I was lucky and only lost  8% of my hives this last winter.  -Mike

Update profile Paul so we know where you are  A lot of beekeeping is location related. I never remove or cover my SBB's, in the south with winter temps in the 20's.
