Title: Hello from Maryland
Post by: PSR II on June 15, 2015, 04:35:08 PM
Hi All,

I live in Maryland by the BWI AIRPORT. I have gotten a lot of great information on this message board and finally decided to join. I have been keeping bees for more then ten years. I have been able to over winter them only to lose them the next. I did not have bees last year but I bought two nucs this year. They are doing very well. I was about to do an inspection when one threw off a swarm that landed 40' up in a neighbors tree. I did an inspection and found multiple capped swarm cells so I made a split from each hive putting at least 2 cells in the splits. It appears to be a success. I was also able to catch a swarm. So now I have 5 hives. This is a very exciting year so far.

Hi Maggiesdad,
Thank you.
How many hives do you have?
In all my readings of posts, it never seem to be anyone from Maryland.I hope to hear from more Marylander's.

Welcome to Beemaster. Congrats on your hives.
I lived in Havre De Grace, MD back in the 80. Baltimore can have some really cold winters and deep snow. I cannot get my wife to move back up north due to heavy snow falls we had while I was out at sea on long deployments.

- I started 3 TBHs with 2lb packages in late March, then I picked up 2 locally grown nucs (5 frame deeps) a few weeks ago. Then I split the best TBH on May 29th, and pulled two queencells from the queenless split and started two nucs.

We are dry here... it was probably a dumb thing to do with the summer dearth coming on, but I wanted to get my feet wet. Ask me again this fall and I'll tell you how many boxes I'm heading into winter with.

Hey Maggiesdad,
Nice to hear from you again. Sounds like you have been busy. Heading to a dearth here also. I have started feeding the swarm I caught. In the fall we don't get much of a nectar flow. The swarm was small, probably an after swarm. I hived them in two medium 10 frame boxes. When I inspected them yesterday there was only enough bees to cover 6 - 7 frames.
