Title: Putting empty frames in the centre
Post by: flyboy on July 07, 2015, 12:02:48 PM
I am curious as to whether this is a good idea. Nobody seems to do it but I wonder if this will cause the bees to speed up the process of building comb on the frames.

It is a good idea if you have a good flow on or you are feeding them and enough bees to bee able to do it.

What about on the deeps?

I do it with deeps. It works well when a flow is on.

I run a brood box and two honey supers  - full frames come off the top super  - part filled and or part capped replace them from the middle super and empty frames go into the middle super. Frames in the top super work from outside in leaving empty ones in the middle. Theory being bees with fill top down and outside in and won't climb over full frames to get to empty frames.

During the flow season I work the supers every week or two - brood box once a month. The constant robbing keeps them busy and stops them thinking about swarming.
