Title: Kind of strange Honey sell today
Post by: Joe D on August 01, 2015, 01:35:39 AM
I don't have a lot of hives, just four.  I sell to individuals, the only store I sell any, is at my sister-in-laws beauty shop.  Wednesday a woman came in and bought  6 jars, for her, her children and grand children.  She came back today and wanted all the honey I had left from this year harvest.  Said they had never had any honey that was that good before. Sister-in-law called, I loaded all the cases I had and carried them over there, and she bought them all.

That is great for you but not for your regular customers. Normally when I start running low, I let my regulars know so that they can stock up if they want to.
Could I ask what your price was?

For the local area, I am in the middle, some local honey is as low as $6.50 and some $10 a pint.  I was selling mine for $8.00 a pint.
I had already told regular customers that it was selling well and if they wanted more they should get it.  I usually am out by September, and people will still be calling until Christmas.  I did keep some for me, last year there were two people came by wanting some and I sold them a pint each from my reserve.

Congrads Joe! I'm told around here there's a honey shortage. I've had my signs up for about a week and no takers. $8 a pint, $15 a quart. We've sold around 10 but that was before the signs. I'll feed it back to the bees before I go lower.

I have my regular customers that I call when I bottle my first extraction, there are some at a couple of restaurants, and people I just meet in stores.  I have had a few that say they can get it at the farmer market for $6.50 so they don't buy mine. My regular customers start calling when the first flowers bloom wondering when they can get some.  I don't put up signs Gary, and I might be selling to cheap, but after I give the friends and family some and have my stash put up, if I can sell it for a fair price and bee done with that part of the beek that's fine with me.  Now I have time for other things, working on boxes, frames and etc.

Good luck to all.

The county north of me (Chilton) has a lot of produce stands, peach park, feed stores and the such. These folks usually buy bulk but two of the  major suppliers went out last winter. Honey is a lot of work. I'd rather sell bees.

I have six small convenience stores and gas stations that sell about three cases a month each. Then I sell about ten cases a reason to deputies. I have a coffeeand teasupplier that sells my honey to coffee and teahouse in the middle Ga. Area . thats another thirty cases. I still have enough honey to supply my neighbors, family and landowners. I keep five gals. For me each season. I always seem lucky to make it thru the year. Knock on wood! The income covers the wife's medical needs and a little extra.

Being my first year as a beek I have yet to be able to harvest any honey. I buy some from a local beek when I want honey. He charges only $9 a quart. I may have to tell him to up his price. ( But only after I make my first harvest )

My property boarders on the Highway so I put up a sign this year. I was only selling at work previously but was getting too much honey this year. Generally I sell 24 of the bears (12 oz) per one muth at work. The stand is doing the opposite. I ask $5 for the bears and $10 for the 1 lb muth, and $30 for the ? gallon Ball (6 lb). I may get stuck with a lot of bears or I may be able to keep the signs up and the stand stocked for the year (depending on which way you look at it). I just filled every bottle I had this last weekend and have 4 more cases of muth and the same of bears. Unfortunately there are twice as many bears to a case and I have not sold all of the spring honey yet. High class problems as my brother would say.
