Title: first inspection
Post by: don2 on February 29, 2016, 12:45:26 AM
Looked in on two of my three hives today. Brood hatching, already have drones. The colony I had trouble with last year getting a queen is doing great. had to add the second box. of course it is in a medium I added a deep. The other one will have to be re queened asap. Will check the third hive in a day or two, it has the most bees in it but plenty room. My red buds are blooming already.

don2, sounds like your season is starting well. I did an inspection of one of my hives for the first time this season, yesterday. This was a cutout from a shed last summer. They had built out a deep and medium before fall. Right now the medium is full of honey, and the deep is covered in bees from one side to the other. I'll be adding a medium of comb early next week, and checking for queen cells. If I find any, I'll take the queen and a couple of frames away in a NUC. I'm seeing capped drone brood as well. The Red Maple is going good.

I can't help but grin when I see these posts.  Spring is coming for sure now and it won't be long till I can do my own first real inspection of the year.   37 degrees right now, so it'll be a few weeks.
