Here in southern Illinois the spring weather has bee much like a yo-yo. We've had warm days early for extended periods in January and February and Friday night into Saturday we had frost warnings. Bees are working but I'm not sure with the weather how well they're doing. I plan on checking in on the hives on the next warm clear day. Should I feed or just wait until I get into them? These are hives previously tended by my uncle. All have a single deep, one has one medium super, another has two supers. Also with summer and more activity coming, should I add another deep for increased brood space?
I wouldn't worry about feeding now. There's enough stuff out there blooming now. I have already pulled some nucs off two of my larger hives that were preparing to swarm. As far as adding another deep, that depends on whether the bees need the space yet. I try to give mine at least a deep and a medium or 3 mediums for brood space. Hope this helps a little.
