Title: Swarm
Post by: Jason.roberson on May 23, 2016, 11:52:10 AM

So, I tried baiting for a swarm and they landed on my grill instead of in my box. So apart from that I have no idea what the white stuff is. Also some of the bees are dying and I am not sure why. I am trying to get my equipment around to put them into a hive but need to go buy the frames this evening.

The white stuff is wax. This swarm has been out of their original hive for a few days. If you look close, you will probably see white specs (wax) on the bottom of the bees abdomen. It looks like there were a lot more bees in this swarm than there are now. Are there bees dead on the ground below it?

Yes 12 to 15. There were a lot more bees yesterday. Going today to grab some frames to try to get them in the box. How should I go about doing that? Just lift and drop the grill or brush them off?

Also do I set the hive in front of them and move it tonight if they go in it. (Into my backyard)

You can do it all of the ways you mentioned. If you have some lemon grass oil, use a q-tip to mark the entrance with LGO, just a little bit. You can let them march in but it would be better to shake them into the box. I have let them walk in when I have had to leave the area quickly, during lunch hour.

Ok thanks. Where they are I may try to shake them off the grill and let them find their way into the box

You'd be best served trying to shake or brush them into something. If you can't place a nuc box there, then find something to shake them in, then dump them into the nuc. You could spritz them with sugar water so they don't fly too much. If you just shake them off even near the nuc they're probably just going to recluster in the same spot.
