Title: New guy update
Post by: jtcmedic on June 02, 2016, 03:04:19 PM
Well flow is on in central Florida, and hive is I think going great, my question is have 2 deep 10 frames box bottom is full of brood all 10, 2 deep all full with like 3-4 rows of brood and then honey, and super is 5 half built out 5 empty with honey/ nector will they move honey up to super as they build out the super? And with booth deeps full should I split now or to late in the season.
Thanks for reply
Jeff

Where's 'bouts central Florida? Need to update your profile with a general location on it. I can't say because I'm not familiar with the flow in your area. If the flow is on then I'd say you're fixing to have a swarm. Be sure to move the queen in the split. 1 frame of capped cells equals 3 frames of bees. You said all 10 in the bottom was brood? If so it's fixing to get real crowded real quick. I wouldn't want to lose that queen.

Hernando county fl
Should I move a good distance away,  or can I split right next to it. This queen they made after they decided they wanted to kill the other 2
Pluse may have a tropical system in area and with my job will be away.
Thanks

We have some tallow blooming with the end of ligustrum. I've seen a few green shoots on a few palms but nothing to much. Hope they hit before to long. Mine will usually only work white crepe myrtles when things get tight.

To play it safe I'd move the queen and some bees/brood to a nuc. Make sure they have food, i.e. a frame of honey/pollen.

Crepe Myrtles do not produce nectar. They do not have the nectaries to produce it. Our old bee inspector used to complain about Crepe Myrtle making nasty honey but they do not make any honey.
They do trick the bees to try to collect it but all they get is pollen.

That should work real well if you move the queen to the new hive. The field bees will return to the old site and the new bees With the old queen will orient the new location. The queen will think she swarmed, she is in a new hive. She will bee able to replenish the hive because she is laying from day 1.

JTC.....i forget who it is that has this as their tagline....."The Bees fix all my mistakes"

If both halves of the split got eggs, brood, and stores it will be fine even if they had already swarmed.....Typically the queen and swarm leaves with 50-60% of the population....you would have noticed if the pop was lower than expected when you did the split....was it?
