Title: First look in my first hive
Post by: lilprincess on June 06, 2016, 08:10:29 PM
I'm thinking that most people won't get my excitement as much as people here would.

I had my first really good check in my hive today. I took my 11yo son with me as he is really excited about them too. With no crazy stories to tell,  we smirked the hive a little, took off the top and large box, and peeked in the brooder. What an amazing sight to see. They were so very calm, I had my head net on but didn't bother with the gloves. We checked the edge first then moved toward the middle. I saw various stages of bee growth (?), and even found the queen!(http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160606/111c7e8b25989ad570f16ae4f35dfffb.jpg)

All looks healthy and good to my naive eyes. Hopefully I'm right.

She's a beauty. One question though. How much of the first box do they have drawn out? They don't need the second box till most of the frames in the first are drawn out and covered with bees. It will slow their progress down if they have to police extra space. Have fun, but watch out for the dearth. They won't bee too nice the.

After 40 years, I still get excited when I see that nice a queen. Congrats.  Keep that boy interested. We need more young beeks.

I think you are right most people won't get as excited to see the queen as a new(old) beekeeper.  I was having a hard time finding a queen in one of my nucs yesterday.  When I finally did, I realized why.  She was striped.  I wasn't looking for her to be camouflaged.

Good looking queen that nice solid royal court indicates that your bees like her.
Ditto what Psparr said.

Ditto, ditto, ditto, and welcome. You're right, most of your friends will get tired of hearing about bees. We don't. For future questions put your general location in your profile. It helps a lot when it comes to answering questions.

I probably put it on to early, but now they have drawn half of the last frames on the first box so I figured I'd leave it there at this point. I was a little excited. Thanks for the advice. I didn't think about patrolling area increasing.

Thanks everyone. This looks like such a great forum community. My son is pretty excited with me. He lives nature  and wouldn't let me check the hive without him.
