Title: Figured out why I had an extra frame
Post by: BobMac on July 10, 2016, 04:04:01 PM
As a newbee as of May 14 when i received my 2 nucs,I know the bees have a lot to teach me.One hive is going gang busters, have been adding boxes as they need them.I know you old beeks don't count your equipment but being new with not that much laying around I know what I have.Have had this extra frame and couldn't figure out why.Well today I found out,as you can see by the picture I left it out while i was checker boarding honey into new boxes.I'am using all 8 frame mediums, looks like there filling this comb with honey, should i remove it now or wait till they finish it and just remove it and replace it with a frame and rubber band it in??

I'd do it now, you already forgot it one (lol). Be sure that the comb is rubber banded in the same way you remove it. The cells are drawn out tilting up. On the other hand that white pretty comb is mighty brittle. It'll break under the weight of the nectar or brood stored in it.

Don't feel bad. I've been keeping bees around 4 years and I'm guilty of the same thing. I had a heck of a big comb attached to the roof of the inner cover. I said great, I'll just wait until honey harvest and I'll make comb honey out of that pretty white comb. When honey harvest time came it was full of drone brood. It pays to make notes.

The longer you wait to fix wacky comb the worse it gets.  If it's just nectar, I'd be tempted to just cut it out and replace it with a frame.  You could try rubberbanding to a frame, but I don't know if it is worth the time.

I see nothing wrong with the photo provided.

Brian, it looked like it was connected to the inner cover, maybe I missed something. I wear glasses for a reason.

I've always warn glasses so it seems.  Still looks like good comb.  Shave it off and put it in a frame.  No biggy.

OK, tomorrow i'll put it in a frame with rubber bands ,actually its in the 3rd out of 4
its on the bottom of one of the outside frames in box 3,I have not checked either hive in
3 weeks this hive didn't look like it was gathering like the other one, not as much traffic.
The other, call hive 1 has 5 full mediums added 6 th today, hive 2 has 3 full and only half
of box 4.I took the top box off and just tipped the 3rd one up like some suggested to look for Queen cells on the bottom of the frames when I found out why I had an extra frame.Being my first year I'am just making sure to give the enough room.
Thanks for all the reply's,knew i would get good advice here.
