Title: Capturing a hive on a porch
Post by: MJs Bees on July 14, 2016, 04:56:20 PM
Hi! I am very new to the beekeeping world and have a challenge ahead of me. My future mother-in-law and I have a few hives. We noticed on her porch a wild hive has moved in to one of the pillars. We need guidance on how to properly and safely move the bees out of the pillar and into a hive box. We have found the opening where they are entering, but have no idea how far up into the pillar they go - any suggestions as to what to do?!

THANKS!

Search for "removal" and "cut out" and "trap out" and you'll find much information on removing bees.  Do the search here and on youtube.  Here's a synopsis of some of the concepts:

Check some of JP the Germans videos. He has several on pillar removals. If you still have questions. Post a bunch of photos for us all to look at and maybe we all can help steer you in right direction. Bud  is a good source to.

Since the bees like to build downward I would tap on the post and listen close to the top!You will need help for sure as I HAVE DONE SEVERAL CUTOUTS AND THEY ARE NEVER A LOT OF FUN!You will need a vac system to get the bees.If your really lucky to find the queen it is easier.
I would try a trap out first if possible>Check that method out you probably won't get the queen but the bees will make a new one with a frame of Brood and eggs put into the capture box.

I am new as well, have done a total of 4 cut outs 2 good, 2 not so good and it is hard work sometimes. My water box hive was easy, the tire bees 4 hours of hard work.... Both are healthy hives today.

Heck did not even see that. The morphine drip and Demerol I on I'm lucky to see anything. When my wife was on it in the hospital see saw a sniper on the roof of the hospital a black cat in the room and she had a big salad fork and spoon in her hands that she couldn't drop. I was rolling on the floor and she kept getting mad at me
