JollyB, welcome to the forum.  There's a lot to learn and this is a good place to learn it.

You might want to put Wichita Falls in your profile, since Texas covers a lot of territory and answers to beekeeping questions depend on location. 

I'd recommend that you go to Michael Bush's website and also Scientific Beekeeping and read everything on those two sites, plus all the archives on this site.
