Title: New box
Post by: jtcmedic on April 22, 2017, 03:58:17 PM
In central Florida
Quick question 2 nuc have built out and filled my deeps, (had trouble last year with double deep with shb so was going to run deep and a half) but 9 day after putting on medium with foundation they have built 0. I pulled up one frame to the medium as a experiment today. Guess there not ready to build up yet, thanks in advance any input is welcome

That should help. If you have no flow going you would most likely have to feed to induce comb building.

We do not put on additional supers or put nucs into boxes until they start putting honey in the lid. This tells you they need more room.

if it was a deep frame pulled up in a medium they might be filling in the bottom of the deep.  I think you are better off pulling out the deep and putting in a medium.  When it gets drawn then pull it up and cut off what they built on the bottom and replace the deep frame.  Once you have drawn out medium frames you are golden.

If you give them too much room they struggle as a lot of energy goes into keeping the extra area warm.
Also the brood area can struggle if the hive is not warm enough. Tighter bees will grow faster.
If they are not using the new box take it off and they will tell you when there is a honey flow or just need more room by sticking honey every where they can.

Thanks for the answers and comments. I read another technique is to use newspaper just like in a combination (except no bees in other box) and bees will open when they need it any body done that ?

I don't like the idea of creating a barrier either to the bees or to ventilation.  The top box would be vulnerable to wax moth and hive beetles.

Thanks, you read so many nuggets of info, not the whole process, and little  things stick in your head,
Thanks again
