Title: Sky Full of Bees
Post by: hrtull on May 11, 2017, 07:11:14 PM
I work at a golf course in Ohio. The course is situated in a wooded area. Today when I was mowing  one of the
fairways there were thousand of bees swarming in the air on this particular fairway that is bordered by the woods.  I guess it would be anyone's guess if they were leaving the area or arriving from another location. I have worked there for several years and am only aware of one active hive that has been established for years in a tall sycamore tree on other side of course. I am not aware of any bee activity in the area of this swarming this morning. My questions are. 1) Are these just transient bees in route some where. 2) Were they in some sort of staging flight waiting to hive up on a branch or moving in to a new location. 3) is there a good possibility they are in that local area where I saw them. I can go on a bee hunt tomorrow afternoon.  I have been trying to trap a hive this Spring but no luck. I have boxes on site if I could capture  a swarm. Any info on this bee behavior would be appreciated. Thanks

could be a swarm. next time keep five gal bucket with a stick and when you see this stop and start druming the bucket to see if they will land. its called tanging. it could lso be a mating area. thousands of drones flying to mate with new qweens. they like the striaght lines of trees on golf courses for navigation.  good luck looking friday. they can be high up on pine limbs.
