Title: Brood turning black
Post by: yes2matt on June 15, 2017, 01:53:05 PM
I can't find my UPenn handbook. I misplaced it because I haven't needed it yet. But this makes me sick, do you know what it is? It is a very weak nuc, this is the first round of brood on a new queen.

It looks like starvation to me.

So maybe shake a couple frames of nurse bees from a strong hive and get them some 1:1? I'm terrified it might be something worse, with the brood turning black like that. But they have little to no jelly in the larva cells , hope you're right.

I have fairly strong hive that I believe to be queenless. They have nectar coming in.  Can I just combine them w newspaper?

I would guess starvation.  EFB is possible, but typically they just turn brown, die and get removed and never get to turn black.  AFB dies after they are capped, not before.  How strong is the hive?  How strong was the hive?  Do they have stores?

Yes, you can newspaper combine, or just feed..

Super weak nuc. A couple months ago they were a swarm cell frame and a couple more frames. That didn't work put so I gave them a frame of BIAS, and only today peaked in to see of it took. It did!

I've given them feed the whole time, but they didn't take much. I thought it was because we had a pretty good nectar flow on. But I got in the jar today and it smells a little rummy. So maybe that was the issue.

Do I need to feed them up strong before a combine? Or just put them on as is?
