I stumbled upon some information about using heat to kill varroa mites. Has anyone tried this? I am from Minnesota and I am convinced you cant freeze them to death was just wondering if anybody out here has tried heat. There seems to be a lot of info out there about it. Harold
HAROLD-what on earth do you mean? You mean like using fire? Where do you intend on using HEAT to kill varroa? In the hive? On the bees?

I vaguely remember reading such an article as mentioned. The heat source was solar, say a black lid or something, don't exactly remember. What I do remember is varroa died at a temp the bee could tolerate, something like 104F. Not a quote, I'm guessing at the temp.

I think it is 116 F or 47 C. for two and a half hours. Twice in spring about a week apart then in the fall two more about a week apart. I have to try this. Hope it dont cost me a hive of bees. Will probably use my weakest hive first. If they dont die then I will do the best ones.

Now it isn't FlowHive promising easy honey and it IS European build, so that number of dollars is no mean feat of achievement.
But not enough information for mine as there is no indication how temperature/enthaply/humidty is being determined. Those factors alone would be high risk in some climates.
