Beemaster's International Beekeeping Forum

The date is set for the BeeMaster Beefest 2018. It will bee from Friday, March 23 through to Sunday March 25, 2018 at my farm in Baker County FL.
The address is 23523 County Road 125 N, Sanderson, Florida, 32087-3019.
I have lots of space for campers and tents. I have a one acre pond so bring your fishing poles.
Please let me know on this thread if you are coming and how many in your group.
I will get the names/numbers for the local hotel/motel.
Closest large airport is Jacksonville International Air, 60 miles.  There is also the Lake City Gateway Airport, 29 miles, if you can get flights from your location. It is closer to the farm but it is a small airport.

I guess what I mean to say is are you north FL? Even though Florida touches Georgia, it's a heck of a drive from the top of Ga, to the bottom of FL.  :wink:

I am only 4 miles from Georgia. If you look at the Florida Georgia boarders on the east side you will see where Georgia dips down into Florida. I am half way down in Florida on the west side of Georgia. Your best bet will probably be to come down I-75.

Actually Jim this is the first I have heard of this gathering.. I pop in and out of here bust mostly admin on the Beemaster FB site. May I suggest you start a potential those attending list just for fun... it is always good to see who may be interested.

What are the plans for the event? And yes I very well may make the 5.5 drive from SC and maybe fishing nut would like to share the ride....I suppose it is an open forum invite event  :wink:

Yes, this invite is to all BeeMaster members and I will probably have a few local area beekeepers.
I can probably get a few people to speak on Saturday if that would be good. I thought we would do a few hands on splits. I may be able to set up a removal but I'm not sure we will have that much time. I'm looking for ideas.

It is mostly about just meeting each other.... things grew after bud 1. But yes they usually had a removal which was just something to do I guess. Usually lead by JP and I think Shawee's or Yappy. The bees in buds area are real swarmy and we were there in April the height of the season. He ran swarm traps like fishing a trot line so there were always plenty swarms and one year they cut a swarm out of a swarm trap. Bud did not put frames in swarm traps. And there was usually some grafting.. and some hive entries just to say we did. The first year we made a night entry with red lights to I guess prove the bees did not react to red light vs white light (Buckley led that)
And did I say we ATE and ATE and ATE some more.

Me personally but not necessarily a hands on... I would like to hear some lip balm recipes... creamed honey (maybe cinnamon and pecan) and hear about trapping pollen and preparation of pollen for sale to the public. Maybe someone that will be in attendance have these items in their repertoire.

Oh on the hands on area, I am all thumbs... I know nothing of wood cutting simple joints and simple nuc building etc. I know that is your expertise. I would love to learn a simple joint and how to cut it without a dado blade. Learning a simple method to do this on a cheap table saw or with a circular saw would make the whole 5hr drive (I re goggled just 5hrs) worth my while along with meeting folks. I also would like to return to SC with all my fingers and thumbs :wink:

I can't say for sure that the wife and I will be there, but I can say for sure that we'll try. She works a crazy schedule at 911 and it's also night shift. But if the stars align we'll be there for sure. We used to hunt in Madison Florida for hogs, how far are you from there? That's just south of Valdosta Ga. The ride isn't to bad at all. SC I appreciate the invite for a ride, if you have room for a duffle bag or 2 and a fishing rod maybe we'll take you up on it and split gas cost or something. I'm close to Hartwell Ga. Lots of SC folks know where that is.

I have flown both quatum's and Shimano's both with Lightning Sticks  :tongue: FN I used to fly them a lot in the Chatooga around Wallhala or on the East fork. Then I got lazy and started flying on the reservation. Been wanting to go to Moccasin... but actually spinners or live.... no flying  :wink:

I don't mind words having more then one meaning.  If we had words that only had one meaning there would just be more words out there that I would not be able to spell. :oops:

Thanks for the ideas. I bought my wife a lip balm kit. Maybe by then we will be able to do a demo.
We also make candles but we just used up the last of our wax for an upcoming farm swap.
By Ultralite it take it you are referring to a camper. At first I was thinking you meant a
Small air craft.
I have cleared an area on the farm that will one day be a runway for an Ultralite.

Today I set up a Trapout that we set on one of the days of Beefest. It is in a tree and the owners son agreed to let the bees remain in a tree until spring.

Another thing we can do along the lines of the second amendment is target shoot. I have a 100 yard range set up with a shooting table. One thing, from experience with past parties, the only shooting done will be as a group at the designated target. We can also move in as close as we want as long as we are using the designated back stop.

Howdy all, I have just been getting on every now and then.  Iddee my CO back when I was in the service was Orville Jr.  and Sc my ultra lite looks a little like your maybe slightly larger, but it is closer which might make up the difference.  Mine is a Penn 9500.

For those that want to stay in a hotel during Beefest 2018, there are 3 motels in Macclenney Florida. They are all about 20 miles away.
They are:
Motel 6
Econo lodge
Travelodge
The closest is the Travelodge.

Hi Jim, got my tickets to Myrtle Beach awhile ago.  Just now giving you a heads up that my brother and I will be motoring down to the beefest in the road coach.  I hope to be there Friday or Friday night.  Will certainly take part in Saturday and Sunday's activities.  Looking forward to meeting you.

Walmart sells license, but I don't think you need one on Jim's private pond on his farm. He can correct me if I'm wrong. Since I'm driving down, I'll load an extra rod or two for you.

I'm not a good fisherman. I have had several fishermen friends come over and catch the bass on worms and small fish lures. I used to catch a shellcracker and then catch the larger bass. Problem was only the shellcracker was hooked and the bass would release it at the dock. I just enjoyed the fight.

I would like to come down from Charlotte. But I have only my old Suburban. So it is a very expensive trip. Could I catch a ride? Or offer as many as 8 rides and get some gas help? I suppose I could come down either 77 or 151 or 95 thru SC.

I normally don't, but a few PM's and I had to commit "tentatively"  if my health holds. I wouldn't want to get too many involved, as I am able to travel like that about 50% of the time. My health is closing me in a little more each month.

I have an Isuzu Rodeo. I will be buying the gas. All you need is half the motel and your food eaten off the farm. Maybe all the motel if Keith or Rob goes with me, and not the other.If only one of them goes, I will have to split the room with him. If both or neither go, we can split the room.

I have three kiddos coming along, they're fully equipped and bee trained and well behaved. We would like to tent it if that is still ok.

What kind of fish are in your pond?

Should we plan to eat independently or chip in for a common meal there or eat "off campus" somewhere?

Any nuc swapping or other "trading circle" activity going on?

Bring your children by all means. All I ask is that the parents be responsible for them. We have a zip line, a swing, lots of friendly animals including 3 baby cows and 42 acres to roam.
We will be group cooking/eating. Please bring food to share.
I will be providing short ribs for one meal. We will probably eat at a local restaurant for at least one dinner meal and maybe a lunch or 2 if we are out doing a removal. I just receive a call for a open air hive removal in Jacksonville that I plan on checking out, when I get back home, for us to do during Beefest.
There are shellcrackers, sunny's bass and one 2 foot catfish in the pond. I plan on having a bass/shellcracker meal as long as we have at least one good fisherman.  :cheesy:

If you have anything to swap, bring it. I could see if ny local bee suppliers are interested in bringing their wares if any one would like to see and buy equipment and bees.

I received a text while I was still in PA that the open air hive removal turned out to be a MBH.


A Mobile Bee Hive. In other words it was a swarm. I wish it really was an open air hive. Maybe we will get lucky and I will get a call for a real open air hive.

No fees, all camping is here on my farm. Just pick your location and set up your tent. How many will you have in your group?

Directions to the farm.
From I-10, east or west, use exit 333, the Glen St Mary exit, County Road 125 N. Head north towards Glen St Mary. Go 14.5 miles north, the last 5 miles you will be in the Osceola National Forest. When you see that the trees are thinning in the distance start slowing down. There will be a dirt road, OC Horne Rd, on the right with just 25 feet of asphalt at the entrance, DO NOT TURN THERE. My drive way is about 50 feet past OC Horne Rd. There will be a BeeFest 2018 sign at the entrance and there is a sign with a cow that says Annabelle?s Wish. Follow the signs to the first gate on the right and then around the pond to the house.

For those that are camping at Beefest. You will not need to bring any firewood. I have a 4x12? trailer full of cut firewood and we will will be having a bonfire each night and there is lots more in my forest if we need it.

Me and my buddy Tom are all set for Beefest and will be driving down from NY.   Tom is a master dowser and will be bringing a bunch of dowsing rods to teach anyone who is interested learning dowsing and how to use it in beekeeping.   Looking forward to a great event, let's hope the weather is on our side  :cool:

That is great Rob. I am looking forward to learn how to douse. We usually don?t have long rainy days here. My new barn has a 60? by 36 foot area we can use for gathering in if we do have rain.

For those that are coming, I have a friend who will be coming that sells nucs and one deep hives. If anyone is interested, he can bring them to BeeFest. I need to know ahead of time so he knows how many to bring. He does not treat. Bees are in Orlando. PM me for more info.

I?m still work on the agenda and the meals. I have several traps set, hoping to have them for cut outs and hive installation.  I have one hive that I separated into 3 hives that I plan to split.
I plan to do some demo?s on candle making, lighting a smoker, and what ever anyone would like to see.
I plan on doing some short and long range shooting.
My wife has some projects she is working on for kids.

That sounds great TY. I have been talking to several people that are coming and I intend to do the bulk of the events on Saturday with a few things on Friday afternoon and Sunday morning. I suspect a lot of people will be driving Friday morning and Sunday afternoon.

I have an add in a local newspaper for free swarm removals so that may affect it.
I was planning on splitting all 3 hives on Saturday but the bottom hive swarmed yesterday and I can hear queens piping, so we will have to at least take that one apart on Friday morning and get the queens out of it. They should still bee in there.

1:00 PM, Lunch at farm. Register and Name Tags.
Friday after lunch we will go to Bobsim?s place to split his 2 or maybe 3 hives and cut them into Langstroth frames.
Crafts for kids

6:30 PM, Dinner at farm.
Friday night: Bonfire, S?Mores

Saturday morning:
8:30 AM, Breakfast.
We will inspect and split the 3 hives near my barn.
Scavenger hunt for kids.
1:00 PM, lunch.
Inspect and split the Flow Hive.

This afternoon Tom did a great presentation to dousing and its benifits. It was really interesting. Then he pulled out a bag of dousing rods and let us try to do it. It was amazing how strong the rods crossed when we crossed over the fields. I watched Tom set up the area for marking out the area. He just walked the area and waved his hand in the air with no dousing rods and then put sticks or pine cones on the ground to mark the fields. Then during the presentation he use the rods to show what happened as he crossed those lines. When I used them, i was so amazed at how strong the rods were that I looked up so that I could not see the markings on the ground and did it again and they were always right on the mark when they crossed.

The unknown was my brother George.  I drug him down there.  He has no interest in bees but had a good time learning about bees.  He loved the mix of people and had a good time.
For me it was fabulous.  Jim and his wife put on a heck of a bee fest.  It is nice to meet the people you talk to on the forum from far a way.  Iddee didn't even make fun of me and was a pleasure to be around.  Sorry Wally I had to let it out.
It was great to meet Yes2Matt and his wonderful kids.  God it is such a pleasure seeing well behaved kids having fun.
I sure would like to see it double or triple in size next year.  Maybe we can take up a collection so Jim doesn't get clobbered with all the expense.
The one that gets the prize for being most involved is Jim's turkey.  He took part in everything and wasn't bashful about putting in his two cents.

I am waiting on a reply from Jamie Ellis with the date of the 2019 Bee College date. It was the same time as this years and I do not want that to happen next year.

The pictures with the top bar hives were at Bobsims House. We split 2 of the hives and gave me the old queens with the splits. He did not want any more than 3 hives.
Just as we were starting it looked like one of the hives was swarming. After close inspection, we realized that it was thousands of drones returning to the this hive. We suspected that there might be a drone congregation area close by and they were using this hive as a refueling station.

I brought another jar of honey that wasn't creamed but has a hint of fermentation.  I eat this regularly.  However, I left the jar in Myrtle Beach at my brothers house.  I don't know if I will have any left by next year for a taste test.  Maybe everyone could bring a sample of their honey to Beefest 2018 and pass it around.
We have given our employer notice that we are moving to FL by Nov. this year.  That means I have to get rid of my bees so I am unsure if I will have a new crop of honey to bring to FL.
Another dilemma is how to get 20 gals of mead down to FL.  Anyone know what the law is for transporting mead?

Most officers are not going to stop a small load of bees but it is not that hard to call your inspector and have the proper paperwork to go from NY to FL.
My late Father in law just had it done last year to send 2 hives from PA to SC. He had no problems at all. As a mater of fact, they even went so far as to say he was mite and beetle free. He does not use chemicals.

Over 1400 miles and the days of driving 24 hours straight are long gone.  I could be wrong but I believe transplanting bees from Upstate to West Palm Beach is too far for them to survive.  Not acclimated.  No different than buying bees form GA and expecting them to make it up here.  And finally there is the place we bought.  No way in heck the HOA is going to allow bees.
Once we get down there the wife wants a permanent home with more land and no restrictions.
I was thinking if a gallon or so of mead fell off the truck near Jacksonville on our way down you would be up to selling me some bees to get started again.
After I do my splits I will put out the word to sell them all off.  The less we have to bring the better.
FYI My wife has run the largest storage facility in Upstate NY for about 30 years.  She has seen hundreds and hundreds of people store their house hold and move 1500 miles away.  Then in a couple three years they realize the cost of moving their stuff is more then what their stuff is worth. And they already paid more in rent then what their stuff is worth.  So we are selling everything.  40 years of collecting vintage, antiques, do dads and furniture.  I have got the problem of figuring out what tools to bring.

Keep in mind, you have a stopover place about halfway, if the need ""or desire"" to use it arises.

I appreciate that Wally.  I got to stop by and drop off those wheel weights anyway.

Good luck with that, NY has one inspector who focuses on the 60 commercial operations in the state.
