Title: Add new box underneath brood box?
Post by: damienpryan on September 27, 2017, 10:26:22 PM
Hi All,

I've got a hive in a single 10 frame box that is ready to have a new box added (nectar coming in).
I'm wanting to cycle out the old frames in the box.

Can I add a new box with a mix of foundation and old frames underneath the single brood box ?
I'd be hoping the queen would be forced down into the new bottom box as the bees fill the top box with honey.
But not sure if that will happen.

Cheers

Damien

Damien,
Yes, you can under super especially for making a new brood box. Bees naturally build down and then put their honey storage above the brood.

thanks.

I put the extra box underneath last Saturday.

Would have been easier if I had have a spare base handy...

damiem.....
I usually turn my top upside down and set my hive bodies on it when I need a place for them to be while I look lower in the hive.
Hope this helps.
