I live in a very small town. As a business owner we try to support each other's business as best we can. The other day one of the owners of the hardware store asked if I'd be interested in a presentation some evening on bees to help her drum up some business. She has a small line of basic bee hobby hardware.
I've been doing this for two years. This next spring will be the beginning of my third. I just wanted to give a short....less than an hour...talk on the basics of bee keeping and what to expect.
Any ideas on a format. It in all likelihood would be very informal.
Aroc,
You can talk about the bees:
life cycle, egg- 3 days, larvae- 6 days, pupa-11 days, nursebee 3weeks, field bee- 3 weeks.
Different jobs house bees do.
Different jobs field bees do.
Benifits we get from bees; honey, pollen, propolis, pollination.
Medicinal benefits we get from raw honey, bee stings, propolis.
Parts of a hive.
Ask for questions to determine what your audience is interested in learning.
Jim
Just to add to what Jim said: talk about the fun you have had; what you have already learned from the bees; where to get supplies (check to make sure your friend has enough for a beginner); clubs in the area; and of course this great forum. - Mike
In one talk about all you can do is talk about the basic idea of beekeeping. Life cycles and such are pretty time consuming for that kind of presentation. I'd focus more on the decisions they would need to make to get started.
And how important it is to have great mentors, like you find here.

I have done presentations for a few schools and service clubs. I have not found a DVD that I think is right for this type of presentation. All I found are strong on teaching with little PR. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
In an hour it is my experience one raises more questions than could possibly be
answered... you end up in the carpark, driver's door open, interior light burning
the battery, and scrabbling around in the briefcase for that elusive pack of business cards!
Do what your 'customer' is doing, use the time to sell your business and herself
an avenue to sell some of the mandatory hardware lines beekeeping uses.
So... line up some anecdotal war stories around bee capture, infrastructure
building and yard location, and make it fun so the 'sell' is motivating. In finishing
up you can sell yourself and your educational services.
PLAN for 40minutes and allow an hour of your time, inclusive of post talk discussion
with your 'customer'
Where interest moves to action your 'customer' gets to sell many tubes
of sealant and you get a feel for numbers in your beginners bee course.

Agreed... and more, most are just TMFI for newbies and often fodder for
argument if there is someone as (I) in the audience.
A few - very few - subtext slides works, accompanied by a confident
factual presentation at the audience level. It pays to know well beforehand
the makeup of any audience, and so build your slides around them, their
presumed understanding.
If the reader is getting from my comments one needs way more than
topic knowledge, a DVD player, and a certificate in public speaking then you
are halfway on the road to success as a 'trainer'.

I am beginning to wonder if you worked for Dow.
