Title: Looking for decent instructions for Kelley Honey Comb Kit #22
Post by: Aroc on February 06, 2018, 03:49:22 PM
I purchased one of these for my wife for Christmas. Thought I should put it together for her. Needless to say the instructions for this are absolutely terrible. I for one usually do better with visuals. Thought there might be some sort of video. All I really need is a couple of good photos  to see actually how it goes together. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you so much in advance.

P.S.   I tried calling Kelly Beekeeping but they were absolutely no help. In fact the gal I spoke with really had no idea even what I was talking about. Very disappointed in Kelly beekeeping right now.

Aroc, I have no answer.  I just wanted to say HOWDY WHERE YA BEEN.  I know you are frozen in Mt. good to hear you are still posting.  I been wondering how you been doing, snowed in bees or what?
Blessings

Aroc, you need to purchase foundation separately with the kelly kit #22.  I would not use plastic foundation, rather wax foundation.

Van,

Yup, it has been a long winter. Received more snow today. Has been getting up to 40? the past few days however. Bees seem to be doing good so far. May have lost one of our five hives but it didn?t look so good going in to winter to begin with.

Oh and yes I did get the wax foundation.  Just can?t figure how to put the interior structure together.

Sorting across software available this link works, sort of.

I have those instructions.  As you can see they are that good.  I?m good with most of it except #3.

On page two there is a figure showing how the sections go together. Is that not helpful?

That?s not the area I?m having trouble with.  It?s not the sections. It?s the part that holds the sections.  On the introductions, #3 talks about the 7 scalloped pieces and the 14 blocks.  It says to nail the blocks to the end of the scalloped pieces.  With out a pic,  I have no idea what they are talking about.  What orientation?

Sorry Michael,  not sure how that helps me putting this particular kit together unless I just missed it.  It is an interesting article though

I think I figured it out.  A simple pic or even a simple statement as to orientation such as 90 deg or perpendicular would have been nice.

I do want to thank everyone for their help.

I reckon the word we are looking for here is "intuitive" - #3 is certainly
not that. Kudos for sorting it ;-)

It seems to me it is often the case manual writers around bee stuff
assume the buyer has done it before, or owns skills the assembly requires.
Certainly Yotube.c*m reflects this with many a video nailing very basic stuff.

Posting as I had to ask myself why the use of "basswood", something I had
never heard of but assumed it was USA speak for Balsa - a common craft
wood here.
This page sorted it for me... others might find use in the read;

Again ?herbhome?   It?s not the sections I was having trouble with.  Folding the basswood was not a big deal.  Just need to make sure you wet the grooves or they will break.  It was the part from #3 about nailing the base that contains the sections.

With everyone?s help I think I figured it out.  I may purchase another one just so I can make a video for the other idiots out there like me....😆😆😆
