Title: Interesting observation today
Post by: bwallace23350 on May 22, 2018, 10:40:11 PM
I saw a honeybee siting on a blade of grass while I was pulling weeds in my garden. Not sure what it was really doing but while I was watching it would use its wings to kinds walk up things and such. It might have been drinking water off the blades of grass. Eventually it flew off because I took my eye off of it and it flew off. For a while though I got to see some unique bee behavior while only a foot or two from it.

I had an interesting site today.  After two days of rain, slugs were everywhere.  I noticed 4 dead slugs on three different hives.  Have the body of the slug was dried up.  The slugs were about 2 inches in length.

I?m GUESSING a bee stung the slug{s} in the half that was dried up, killing the slug.  The slugs were on the side of the hive towards the entrance.
Blessings

I can't picture a bee stinging a slug.  What threat to the hive would a slug be?  Maybe the slug died some other way.

I've got a weird one, not with my honeybees, but the miner bees that live in my backyard.  A week or two ago, the drone miner bees were obsessed with my mother's parsley.  At least I think they are drones, they have a sort of yellow mustache that the working miners don't have.  They were clustered together and seemed to be chewing on the leaves.  The were doing a little bit of damage even, leaving some of the leaves brown and chewed up.  And the plant has no flowers whatsoever.  They're not doing it anymore, but it was really strange.  I can't imagine what they'd want with parsley?  Maybe some sort of miner bee DCA or something??

Member,
I suspect the minor bees were using the chewed up leaves to build their nest plugs. If you found a nest, you could test this theory by putting out a piece of plug and see if it smells like parsley.
