No, but I knew a beek that trained a toad to sit at the hive entrance. I suppose to catch SHB and wax moths. :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:
that's a good trick, those toads can be stubborn rascals
Never heard of it before. I suspect the hawk is after the brood.
We have several hawks on our property and have seen them catching lots of bugs in the field behind our house. I always thought they ate mice and small animals.

I think the hawks I see around here are mostly after my chickens
That plus my wife's bird feeders
I can't imagine how they could get at a beehive unless it was broken open
Maybe some unsuspecting beekeeper was doing a cut out and went for a drink of water and boom 💥 got it and gone!! Hee hee j/k who knows but one thing for sure, the bees didn't appreciate it.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be interesting to learn the back-story on that pic.
That comb looks like it came from Dorsata honey bee hive. They have large single comb hives.

Here is a picture of one

I haven't had bees for a couple of years, just got 2 packages last year
looking forward to spring
they're flying big time today
Pretty cool stuff. I learn something new every day.
