Hello All-I am brand new at this but need some advice. I live in a subdivision and I have a black labrador fenced in the backyard. The fenced in area is 90'X 120' and I have built a 6' platform to put my hive on and a small 2' fence around the top of platform. I got my first package of Italian bees yesterday and plan on installing them this afternoon. Is this too high for the hive and will my dog be ok?I appreciate any advice!
the bees will like being up high
my hives are a foot off the ground and my golden retrievers have no problem with them
be careful working on a platform so you don't fall off
It will help especially by keeping the dog out of line of sight of the guard bees and keeping traffic over the dog's head, but if the dog is confined and the bees decide to attack (however unlikely it has been known to happen) it probably won't matter that much how high it was. Odds are it will be fine. But "You never can tell with bees"--Winnie the Pooh

Just be careful. I was sitting by hives with dog in tow and Alf got popped and that followed up with a trip to the vet. He doesn?t go by the hives any more
Thanks!Just got my bees installed an hour ago and they were much calmer than I expected! Hope it's not too late in the evening.....
Dunc,
We have had 2 Golden Retriever service dogs as long as I have had bees. I have had as many as 20 hives on low platforms. I saw our first Goldie, Radar put his nose to a hive full of bees once. No reaction so my quests is that he did not get stung. He never bothered them again. I never saw our second dog get near the hives. I have at least 12 hives inside my fence. Not a problem.
It you lived in south Florida, I would be concerned, but not in Tennessee.

Thanks appreciate the advice!

Goob boy!! My Doberman got lit up the first day -this dog digs fire ants and the bee bothered him worse. My mastiff/boxer got a fat eyebrow for a week. They both steer clear now as they are face -high with entrance.
Now my Malshi is below the entrances and he pees on the mason blocks!! Lol good on you dog lovers
