Title: Past Week Roller Coaster.
Post by: Donovan J on July 15, 2019, 08:57:30 PM
So some background, I split the only hive I had on Wednesday June 19 to eliminate a swarm threat. On Wednesday July 3rd I saw a virgin queen in the hive. I shut the hive up and hoped for a good mating. Last Friday July 12th she was still in there walking around. I decided to get supplies to mark my queen yesterday off of amazon and got free one day shipping and it arrived today. I went in to the hive and marked queen Rose. I went into the other hive and saw... eggs. Oh no... not laying workers. But only saw one egg per cell and they were not on the the sides of the cells. I looked some more and I saw her! The queen has been mated! The bee math made perfect sense now. If she hatched the day I saw her first it would mean she would start laying today! I carefully marked her and celebrated! They are running out of space so I'm going to get a new box for queen Rose and flip flop empty frames for honey frames. I'm so excited!

I hate to say this in July, but remember our weather and make sure your hives get a chance to build up and store before it comes down on us.

Congrats on the successful split and mating.

Nice, Xerox. Every new experience with these new hives is both exciting and slightly terrifying at the same time. I sure hope the long timers still get the same thrill as us newbees. Congrats.

Thank you. No joke they have enough stores to survive two winters if they wanted to. I saw a swarm cell with an egg in it so shes running out of space. Ill give them more space tomorrow.

Not really, it is very stressful though. The whole time I was like "Don't kill the queen" I did drop her but quickly scooped her back up and marked her.

Thanks. I'm sure they do. Something new to learn everyday. I've also learned that good things come to those who wait in this hobby.
