Title: Wax Melter plexiglass thickness
Post by: Stung on August 18, 2019, 07:11:21 PM
When making a wax melter, does it matter what thickness the plexyglass is.  I found a piece about 1/2" thick.

I take it you are referring to a solar wax melter. The thicker the plexiglass is the more it insulates. We normally use thin glass or plexiglass be it is cheaper. If it is thicker so much the better.

This spring I had the opportunity to learn by accident that, a piece of plastic wrap (from the kitchen) works as a good cover for melting wax. I had some cut comb that I set aside during extraction, and didn't want bees of flies to get in it. So I covered the container with plastic wrap. 45 mins later, I saw the comb was mostly melted. I wasn't happy about it - but it was educational.

So I'd guess the plexiglass wouldn't have to be very thick.

I think air tight is more important than thickness of the clear panel.
