I started 6 hives this spring and was wondering were to get unexpensive extractor. Equipment cost were pretty high. How many medium supers do you need per hive? Do you need another set to replace them when you take off for honey process? I live in nw Nj. :D

A very nice inexpensive extractor.
You should always rotate your frames, when you are pulling some out for extraction, make sure you have some to put back in right away. This will minimze stress and help prevent swarming.

The amount of supers you need per hive depends on season and location. As for replacing anything, unless you break it when you extract you shouldn't have to replace it. The whole purpose of the frames are to be able to extract the honey and reuse the frame with the comb intact. Also, if you know any local beekeepers (at the association perhaps) they are usually willing to "loan" you an extracter either for free or at a very reduced cost.
I too live in NJ. I was told this morning by Hravey's Bees that the Nj Beekeepers Association has two for each dividion of the club for loan if you join. I am checking into this info tomorrow. Additionally, Hravey's has a manual homemade one for $150. It needs some repair which he candidly points out.
If you want to excercise while extracting Dadant has 2 frame hand operated plastic extractor for $105.99. Tangent style of course, turn and flip, turn and flip or is it flick and swish?

I live near a dadant branch and was abel to borrow this model and it worked out o.k. . I would get a bigger one if you have 6 hives but the 2 frame will do.
BetterBee has the new Swienty 4 frame radial for a little over $200.00. Don't know of anyone who has tried one but they do look interesting.

As for the extractor.. a neighbor near here just bought a Swienty though I could swear he said he paid a good bit more for it. Says it's the best one he's owned (only done a couple of weeks of extracting with it so far)

The Swienty radial is listed on BetterBee at $229.00...... I've been procrastinating about getting one of the darn things for several months now but have been waiting for a few reports from others as to how they liked it. I still have the old 4 framed little wonder that I bought back in the late 70's so I don't really need a new one, it's just the idea of not having to stop and reverse frames several times during an extraction.
Getting lazy in my old age. :wink:
