I have hives that the covers don?t quite sit flat on the top feeders. I catch lots of yellow jackets.
I never could get all the sugar to dissolve on the last batch of syrup. When I came back from my elk hunting trip I had a bunch of YJs dead in the top feeders. The 3 hives and 2 nucs looked good. I did dump out the dead YJs and dry sugar and put the inner and outer covers back on.

Wow. What kills them in there?
I guess they got stuck or got in the syrup when it was still wet????

Yikes.
That would have been a bad day to check the syrup and flip the lid off with no veil like I often do l, if they were still alive.

Looks to me like you just accidentally made a very efficient yellow jacket trap.

No kidding! I want the specs on that!
The problem is it could have easily become a bee trap... I've seen that. A leak in the cover and the bees get in but bounce off the top and drown in the syrup by the thousands.
