Title: Are round, see-thru hives a good idea?
Post by: Buk on August 03, 2023, 05:35:35 PM
Just saw this article https://newatlas.com/around-the-home/ivry-b-round-transparent-beehive/ for a round, see-thru hive. Does it make any sense?

I think the see-through cover is kind of cool, although you can get clear plastic inner covers for standard hives already.  The biggest problem with a specialty hive shape is simply that no other brand of equipment is interchangeable, which can be challenging for management.  But I doubt the bees care what shape the hive is.

As a novelty hive it would be cool, but would heat be an issue? I see it comes with a cover. That also looks small, so it might be more the observation type hive than a practical hive.  IDK.  Probably a cool thing to try.  As 15th says, the bees most likely don't care.

Lack of good insulation was also my first thought when I saw this. I suspect you will need to put it in a shaded location.

In summer, in Nebraska, we call that a solar wax melter.  In winter we would call it the deep freeze.
