I've never done in all the years I've kept bees.  I would refer you to either The Hive and the Honey Bee or ABC & XYZ Encyclopedia of Bee Culture they have sections on that.

I harvest royal jelly for my family (all my family HAS TO eat pollen, honey and royal jelly, so I am happy  :) )
I introduce the queen cell in a pot with honey. I think that is the best way to preserve its qualities.
I know that in Asia is preserved in this way, and they eat the queen larvae too. My family don´t want larvaes in the food. I, personally, eat if I don´t see what I am eating.
