After reading the pros and cons of box size here, I have decided to go to medium size boxs. I would like to start a medium nuc but have a problem in that I don't have any brood frames of medium size. Of course if I found a swarm I could poke it in the medium nuc but none have presented themselves. Was hoping that maybe maybe a queen would be laying in a medium honey super but it hasn't happend yet. Would it be advisable to put a medium box between two deep brood boxs and see if the queen would put some brood in it?
When ever you may change the size of frames. But it is usefull to do that when Langtroth size are dark brown and you shoud take off then totally from hives.
If you put queen on medium frame foundations and exluder on, brood will be all in mediums after a month and bees fill langtroth frames with honey and that was not the idea?
You need 3 mediums for brood per hive.
Use those deeps this summer and change the frame size when it is autumn and you prepare bees for winter. You need first those 3 medium combs to be drawn up. Next spring you are in piss because you have not extra combs for hive.
I use medium 8 frame, 4 boxes for brood.

This well work as it will probably leave with a deep and a medium for the winter. Work the other deep off the hive when it's full. Work of the second deep next spring the same way. You can then sell it so someone who uses deeps or cut it down to meduim.
Once you are into mediums fully, figure at least 3 boxes for the brood chamber and the rest as harvestable supers.
Mediums make hive management so much easier.
