Title: Got our first frost
Post by: tom on October 14, 2006, 05:34:32 PM
Howdy All

Well last nite we got our first frost and the rest of the weekend they are calling for more. But my girls are still working pollen and most of them are falling to the ground because they are so loaded with nector and next week they are calling for warm weather again so this will throw them off a little but they are working strong all three hives. It shock me that #2 is going full blast and even thou three has shown signs of mites they are going at it like there is no tomarrow so i went and bought a lot of sugar i am going to feed next week but if they are bringing in pollen i will take it they are bringing in nector also there are more bees coming in with nothing then with pollen so they must be gathering more nector then pollen.

Not everything that produces pollen also produces nectar.  My bees continue to bring pollen but the amount of nectar they have gathered since early August is negligible.  I frequently find the bottom boxes completely clogged with pollen and very little nectar or honey stored after I pull my supers in late July.  Fall feeding is ritual around here, cause I only leave them with what is in the brood nest.

And visa versa.

Hello

Mr.Bray i agree with you and they are equal in both even thou we had frost the past couple of nites it seems that plants are coming out more. I see my girls working very hard and tonite hive three was humming loud then i have ever heard them and it is very cool outside and they fly out in cool mornings and hive one the same i notice that hive two has gone into a cluster but my other two are humming and guards at the door. But i did feed today and they took it all but i am leaning toward three as the ones that took the biggest share of the load. But they are coming in more without anything on thier legs and they are flying heavy and only a few with pollen.
