Title: Bee keeping at fair?
Post by: nepenthes on January 26, 2007, 04:57:14 PM
OK, so for my ag project some of you know it is BEE's (whooo) I don't have My bee's yet and wont get them until April 4th.

The things i am able to do for Fair (which gets me an extra .25 credit at school :-D ) is Best quart of honey... and best comb formation?

I was wondering If I would even be able to consider any of those things by Mid July with 2 first year colony's? Or would i just be best left at building some hives and Turning that in? And Im going to talk to my teacher more about it, or even call some one who would know, but For those of you who have taken things to fair, what is to be expected?

Yes. I bought a one deep hive last week of april, during a flow. In 9 days they drew out a complete deep from scratch and had put up honey in both deeps on the perifera. You might not have enough honey to show, but you'll definately have combs by then. B/c its all new wax, it looks soooo awesome! You could also spice up your presentation w/ some pictures. You wont have many bees, and you'll be able to take pics of your queen bee easily.

Well its not a presentation its more like AT fair, I'm pretty sure its just gonna be setting my honey out with a tag and my comb out with my tag or w/e it is they use to mark me and then give me my score, and it would be cool to make 6 bucks for getting an A or w/e the top grade is!

So My hopes are looking up for this! Ill wait for some more input, You got to remember i live in little more rural farm land area in Ohio. (not to far from lots of gardens and stuff though so who knows)

How many colonies are you starting?  Odds are if you have several there will be enough to get a piece of comb honey and crush and strain a bit of extracted honey.  That would only take a couple of frames of honey.

If you only goal is to get enough honey for that it shouldn't be a problem.  Whether you'll have more or not is hard to say.  You might have a lot more.
