Title: Unwanted swarms???
Post by: ktbearpaws on March 03, 2007, 11:29:26 PM
This might be a stupid question, but, I'm gonna ask anyway.
What do you do when you have all the hives you can handle and one swarms??
And you don't want to take the time to sell them...

You could capture the swarm and then a little later combine them with another hive.

Capture them, make a hive and sell them. There is nothing wrong with making a few dollars in this industry. If you don't want to do that check with your local beekeepers group and see if they can use them for their new beekeepers.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

A hive with twice as many bees will make three times as much honey.  If you have too many hives, do combines and have fewer stronger hives.  :)  Or sell them if you like.

How can you ever have enough hives?  I started with one, and the intention of having two.  I have five now, and am looking at the possibility of another one or two this year.  Probably your best route would be combining it with another hive via the newspaper method, making a two queen hive and following MB's ideas on how a population two times greater will produce three times as much honey.  (How long until somebody asks for documentation of a study on that one? :-D)

I'd ring a local beekeeping group and find out if anyone want them. Chances are somebody would be willing to come pick them up and take them away. Ringing your local council, or equivalent, and getting the number for a swarm catcher might also be worth it. If they want to catch a swarm anyway they probably wont mind you trapping it for them.

It's not nice to change what people say...

All part of the joys of playing online. :( At least things aren't so bad around here, some fora have truly nasty mods who are all to eager to edit and twist everything.
