Title: Feeding the new Hive
Post by: GerryL on March 25, 2007, 06:13:10 PM
I have a 1-gallon bucket with screen over inner hole type feeder. Can I place this feeder inverted over the inner cover inside a medium super, or must it be a deep super so that the telescoping cover covers all?

As usual the answer is, it depends.  If you leave open space the bees will eventually fill it with comb.  Especially if they have plenty of syrup.  So it depends on how long "eventually" is.

Feed to get the bees started and no more.  To much feeding can cause the hive to become honey bound with too much honey and not enough area to raise more bees.  Over feeding also tends to open the hive up to nosema. And as MB points out, if you're using internal canister type feeders the bees will begin building comb willy-nilly around the canister if it is left in place to long.
