Title: Nucs or packaged?
Post by: Potlicker1 on March 29, 2007, 09:02:33 PM
Anyone have an opinion on which method is better than the other for starting a new hive?

You may want to add your location for more specific answers to some questions.
A nuc will build up to a productive colony a lot faster than a package.
However the learning process is great as you watch a package build up to full strength!

It depends on your location .Not many suppliers mail anymore .You may have to drive somewere or catch a swarm were do you live anyway. If it is Alaska have to get a package if it is Texas maybe you can go down the street and pick up a NUc

I would say a nuc because you are a lot further ahead in the game for hive development.

Numerical order for preference of obtaining bees for best success.
1. buy a complete hive.
2. Purchase a Nuc.
3. Capture a swarm.
4. Buy a package of bees.

The least expensive is #3. the most common way is #4.

If you want to start bees in something other than the standard deep (like mediums or a top bar) you may find that the package will better meet your needs.  Otherwise the nuc has it over the package any day.
