Title: Feeding question
Post by: bozbee on April 19, 2007, 12:53:22 AM
Maybe one of these days I can start answering questions instead of asking them.

I have a couple hives and i give them qts of sugar water. It seems that after about 3 days the jars are empty. Should i stop feeding them now? Will they get to fat and lazy that they won't work?
Thanks for the previous answers as well

Refill the jars. When they don't want anymore they will stop taking it.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

If you are trying to get them to draw out new comb in a new hive, definatle keep feeding until their "home" is completely drawn. This would be either one deep(warmer areas) or two deeps(colder) depending on your location which you should add.

Sorry to disagree Konasdad but I feed just to get them started.  Once they have most of 3-4 frames drawn out and eggs laid I leave them to their own means.  This maybe one of the reasons I maintain that just getting the hive built to 3-4 mediums (my standard basic configuration) buy the end of the 1st year is a goal and anything else is gravy.  I always maintain that over feeding serves no purpose.  One should feed 3 times during a year if needed.
1. Feed a swarm or package to get it started.
2. Feed in the fall if stores are light.
3. Feed in spring if stores are almost enirely used up.
