Title: BAD HIVE,BAD.
Post by: JRS on April 28, 2007, 12:24:40 AM
I've been getting a lot of calls on swarms and cutouts, but the other day a friend of mine called and said he had two hives he just couldn't deal with anymore. So being new to this, and excited about gaining hives I told him before he did anything radical I would come and look.So I showed up and he began telling me about these EVIL bees of his.He said,Well I went to work them the other day and puffed smoke in the entrance, waited, cracked open the inner cover puffed one time and they come BOILING OUT!He said,They covered my legs, stung me 5 times through my coveralls, once through my gloves and then chased me back to the house! He said,I've had bees try to get me before but these things where after the meat.So I told him we would load them up and I would put them somewhere safe until I could requeen them.Well we pick them up,set them on the tailgate of my truck, then I climbed up in the truck got behind them and grabbed the bb to slide them up in the truck, about the time I set them down the corner of the bb broke off and I seem to have unleashed the demon that was this hive. They poured out of this thing like water and covered everything big enough to stand, needless to say the fight was on.they got him 4 or 5 times, they got up my pant legs and all over my veil.We looked like monkeys out there swatting ourselves with tree branches and anything else we could grab. They got dropped off in a pasture and burned. But I HAD to share that you guys.Feel free to laugh we are NOW!! :-D :-D

You my sympathy and understanding.

It's to bad you had to burn them. If you had been able to requeen them it would have calmed down in a few weeks.

Having all those nasty bees come after you is a very astonishing item. I still don't like dealing with hot hives.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

Hope I'm not getting a gang like that.

Newcomer.  What a story!!!  I haven't yet had that wonderful type of experience.  What an intimidating thing that would be for sure.  I hope that I don't ever have that happen, no thanks.  Have a wonderful day, good health. Cindi

there's another way to calm them beside requeening. of course if they're strong enough, SPLIT them, even the part that has the old queen will get calmer.
anyway, there's been a study about this, if there are...let's say 1% off all bees are agresiver, and as the number grows, that percent grows, but, this little percent can talk other bees into being naughty :-* like rioting :-D

MICI is on the right track .Read Michael Bush's Site read how to handle a hot hive.
Michael calls it "Divide and Conquer" I used this two years ago had very mean bees.

The problem is, that the bad bees look just like the good bees. How can you hope to win peace if you are kicking in the cells walls of the good bees whilst looking for the bad bees?  before long, you upset all the good bees and they join the bad bees in the fight against you.. then you remove the head of the colony by snapping its head off and force a new leader onto them.

Recipe for disaster I think..   :-D

I was kinda thinking like Mklangelo,it's a shame I know but, when you have 2 deeps and a shallow full of bees that have that temperment and haven't been worked for a year,it's just a little to much to worry with.Beekeeping's fun not war.

Are you sure that they weren't just a little afrcanized. Sound just a little to aggressive?
