Title: I need advice on hive placement (North georgia)
Post by: The Dregs on May 01, 2007, 09:01:21 PM
I am getting my first hive next week, NWC's if that matters. I have some questions about hive placement because I have a rather unique property. I live in a residential neighborhood on an unfenced corner lot. My house faces almost due west. My backyard is completely wooded with mostly Oak and some Maple here and there. It extends 300' to my neighbor's woods, which extend 200' more. I have absolutley zero East facing, unwooded property. So I have a bit of a conundrum.

1) I can put the hive in my woods. It will be pretty much in the shade 100% of time in the Summer. Of course, Summers are pretty much hot and humid here.

2) I can put it on the South side of my house, next to my chimney. This means that it will get a lot of sun, but it will be visible from the street. I would hate for a dumb kid to poke it with a stick. I could perhaps build a fence or blind around it.

3) I could do the North side of my house. Almost as completely shaded as the woods, though.

I know I could do it at another property, but I would like to keep it here if at all possible.

option 2

Any kid who pokes it will have to learn bees poke back.

Sincerely,
Brendhan

That's what I figured, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks.

What about the east side of the house?
Surely the woods don't come against the house?

yes, they come all the way up to the house. Literally 5 feet before the huge old trees start. It's nice for cooling costs!

See? You can't see the house for the trees!
