Why is it called a "super"  because it is "superior"?

Pretty much - it is above the broodnest and or queen excluder.

Basically, yes.  Superior means it's super.  Super is a latin word that means "above".  Any box above the brood area, is a super.  Any box superior to the brood box is a super.  :)
