After the nectar flow is over I want to make a couple of nucs from my two hives. Everything I've read says to take the splits miles away after the deed is done. Is there any way to keep the new nucs in the same yard, or at least move them from the back yard to the front yard without the bees drifting back to their original home? I don't know anyone who would love to watch over a nuc for me.
I have had no problem splitting my hives and keeping them a foot away. Yes, quite a bit of the forager bees leave, so be sure to get LOTS of nurse bees.

QuoteAn even split. You take half of everything and divide it up. Face both of new hives at the sides of the old hive so the returning bees aren't sure which one to come back to. In a week or so, swap places to equalize the drift to the one with the queen.

This is a good way of doing it and easy enough.
>same yard splits possible?
I've never done it any other way.
