Title: Ok this is a full month with this hive
Post by: beekeeperookie on June 06, 2007, 01:48:54 PM
I inspected my hive this morning, its on its 4th/5th week, I have just a brood box, the first two frames i pulled out didnt have anything on them in fact two on each side where basically empty.  So I found my queen and I notice what i believe to be a swarm cell its on the bottom of the frame.  My question is are they telling me they are getting crowded?  Do I need to remove this cell?  (http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/8185/picture340sr9.th.jpg) (http://img248.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture340sr9.jpg)

If it was me, I'd take that frame and another one and make a split (5 frame nuc ). Just put the nuc in the same place as your hive is now and move the old one to some other place in a week swap places with the hive and nuc and that will give you your 2nd hive to compare with next year.

Yep, a split is a good thing. No need to get rid of a good queen cell, you never know when it will come in handy.
